I. About the Department
(A) Department History
The Division of Music (the department’s previous formation) was founded in 1969; in 1987 the division was changed to the Department of Music Education; in 2007 the department was reorganized and became its present form, the Department of Music. Through these many changes, education and positiveness have been constants in our professional ethos, and we have continued to work towards excellence in teaching and performance in respect of virtue, wisdom, health, brother and sisterhood, and beauty. Over recent years our department has been dedicated to increasing international exchanges in music and to producing in our students the ability to assimilate art and education.
Our department’s master’s program began in 2000, and has been in operation for over 10 years. In addition to bettering the university’s international competitiveness, it was also intended to establish a beneficial and interactive relationship with society formed from both academics and practical work. In 2004 the Master’s Degree Program in Education was established for working teachers. In 2013 that program was changed to the Master's Degree Program for Working Professionals.
(B) Our Aims:
Roughly half of our graduates go on to work in elementary and junior high schools, though a relatively large number of students go on to continue their musical education. Our department provides a diverse collection of professional courses and training programs in music and gives our students opportunities for real-world musical performances and study, allowing them to become proficient in performance-related work. That is why our curriculum allows for a number of possible employment paths for our students—in music education, administrative posts in the arts and humanities, musical performance, or work in general musical education institutions.
(C) Educational Vision and Goals
1. Undergraduate
(1) To train skilled musical performers, promote international musical exchange, and magnify our students’ perspective and competitive ability
(2) To train skilled teachers for all stages of general music education, develop diverse musical curricula and thus raise the quality of musical education in Taiwan
(3) To train professionals who can combine technology and the arts, industry, and culture, and establish a firm basis of experience and results in academic-industrial cooperation
(4) To instill in our students compassion for their society, and enthusiasm for participation in local arts events
2. Master’s
(1) To increase our students’ professional knowledge and train leaders for the performance and educational fields
(2) To strengthen interaction in performance, creation, education, and research
(3) To promote participation in national and international academic exchange and research events
3. Master's Degree Program for Working Professionals
(1) To train professionals for musical education and raise the level of research and academics in the public sphere
(2) To increase our students’ professional knowledge and provide intermediate and advanced musical curricula
(3) To promote the ability to combine musical ability with other specializations and to emphasize the importance of both theory and practice as parts of a complete education

II. Faculty
Our department currently staffs 21 full-time faculty members (10 professors, 3 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, and 3 lecturers) and 110 part-time faculty members, who are all academic professionals and are enthusiastic about teaching.
